If you’re anywhere near Hollywood be sure to check out the upcoming show, “The Thin Veil” at Antebellum Gallery. I’ll be showing several pieces from my “Spiritus Obscura” series, along with a great group of artists showing work in just about every medium. The opening reception takes place on October 17th, 7 to 9pm. The show runs through November 19th. For location and other important information visit the Antebellum Gallery website.
Finished up the Josh Cole Photography and Illustration store thanks to the store solution the folks at Big Cartel have developed.
If you’re interested in any of my latest prints they can now be purchased here.

I love photography and image making. But I also love sketching, drawing, conceptualizing and don’t spend near enough time doing it. So this last week I decided to start a sketch a day. I’m on day 4. As I do the sketches I’m uploading them to my flickr account which is where all my experimental and miscellaneous work goes. Hopefully this will keep me somewhat accountable. This sketch here is from day 2. More here.
How about you? Doing any sort of sketch or photograph a day? Would love to hear about it and what you’re doing to stay committed to it.
Having been a digital photographer since day one I’ve not had much experience with good ol’ film. Well, except for that one class I took that one time in Freshman year of high school. And at that time it just wasn’t fun.
This time around though it’s quite exciting. I’ve started playing with medium format. First a Diana F+ and now a Mamiya. I think the things that grabs me most this go ‘round is the fact that I can’t see it instantly. I actually have to wait and each time it feels a little like Christmas morning. This Labor Day weekend feels like another Christmas as well. While stopping at several antique stores on our way to Louisville, KY for the long weekend I found this little gem called a Voigtlander Bessamatic. It’s a silver tank of a 35mm camera. When I purchased it and talked the seller down 10% to a whopping $45 I had no idea whether or not the camera worked.
After making the purchase and arriving in Louisville I shot straight to the nearest Walgreens to buy a cheap roll of film. After Google’ing the manual I loaded the film and ran around for the day trying to fire off 24 exposures. “Oh, please please work” I kept saying to myself. Two hours after dropping off the film I picked it up and to my surprise, it worked perfectly. I’m actually still stunned by how well it works and how wonderful the photos look. Like Christmas morning indeed.
Now, I can’t wait to shoot the next roll, but this time with a purpose other than blowing through film to see if the camera works. In the meantime, it’s off to the scanner so I can post the shots to my Flickr page.

I grew up, dare I say it, watching Blossom. So when I got the call to shoot Jenna Von Oy for the “German” edition of Heeb Magazine I was quite thrilled. Heeb Magazine AND “Six”, Blossom’s fast talking friend? A good day indeed. Both the magazine and Jenna were great to work with. Snag the mag if you get the chance. Check out the article and an additional shot here.

Add a handful of blue, a pinch of noise, a twist of contrast, call out the shadows and cool it down. A photoshop action called “Noise in the Cool Shadows” is what you’re left with. Hope you enjoy it.
In addition to the group of adjustment layers, you’ll also find a gradient fill layer. Take a few minutes and play around with that one a bit. Lot’s o’ options. The download is available here.
And as always If you have any questions at all please catch me on twitter or shoot me an email. And spread the word if you dig it.
