“Rising Tide” Work in Progress: Part II

In this shot, “Rising Tide” there are going to be 3 characters (each the same model).  Initially I thought the pose of the model holding out her dress (as seen in my previous post) would be the one I’d go with for the final piece.  However, after reflecting on all the shots a bit and the story I am telling, I felt that it would be better to use a different pose that kept standing out to me each time I reviewed the shots. This now meant I needed to remove the water that I created in the original composite, and move it to the new shot. But before I do that I need to compose the new base shot (fig.1).  Below are the progress shots of this process.

fig. 1 – background plate

Once I created the background plate it was time to drop in the model keeping in mind that I wanted to give the illusion that she was floating (fig.2).  Once the model was dropped in it was simply a matter of creating a shadow to give the illusion. Later I will clean up the shadow and make a few adjustments.  At this point it is most important to get the rough composite completed in order to better visualize the final piece.

fig. 2 – droppin’ the model / raisin’ the model

Once this was complete it was time to drop in the background (fig.3.1).  The idea for the background is to have that projected image look almost as if there was a projecter behind the backdrop. It’s also a perfect time now to add some more dirt to smooth out the ground a bit.

fig. 3 – more dirt and a purty background

Now that I had that completed it was time to add the water back in from the orginal shot composite (fig.3.2). With that in mind I simply did a little drag and drop of the ‘water’ layers from the original composition into the new composite.  Next up – time to add the additional characters (all the same model) into the shot.

This is what I do and love. Each of these have common traits with the other; communication, dots and constraints. Each must communicate an idea to the viewer or perhaps an idea or action. In order to convey this message there are dots in need of connection, often in the form of creative problem solving. And with each there are constraints that must be worked within whatever the size. It's the navigation of these traits, paired with the journey, that drives the need to do these things.

I'm currently available for full-time, freelance and contract gigs. When I'm not working I'm creating photography resources, mixing cocktails or showcasing poster artwork from around the world.
